Do it in Excellence or Not at All

Excellence is a Direction and Not a Destination

If you caught the #MondayMoments I have posted on my social media you will hear often the word “excellence” followed by frustration. When I review the comments I notice that my followers confuse perfection for excellence. This is a common mistake that can cause unrealistic goals and unhealthy stress.

From the latin word “excellere” meaning the quality of being outstanding or extremely good. Aristotle said it best some 2,300 years ago: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” I would go a step further and proclaim that excellence was a direction and not a destination.

My call upon my community to strive for excellence is not one that I take lightly. In my self-reflection I find that this is an everyday hurtle. When I decided to leave a lifestyle of dangerous environments and sketchy colleagues, I changed my direction from prison to excellence. When I decided to stop smoking cigarettes after 10 years . . .

"I changed my direction from death to excellence."

When I decided to apply for local government positions, in spite of my criminal history, I changed my direction from defeat to excellence. When I decided to share my stories monthly on this blog, I changed my direction from isolation to excellence.

Every day we make decisions regarding our families, businesses, careers, wellness --- are we making those decisions in excellence or in perfection? We can not reach perfection, in my personal opinion, but we can walk in our purpose in the quality of excellence. “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you make proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9 ESV)

Sometimes as a small business owner I question the quality of my work, I often find myself searching for a comparison just to “check myself.” I no longer need to check my self-worth. I am operating in the spirit of excellence and with this directive, I have learned that quality over quantity will be the underlying vision statement in my business.

Stop allowing others to dictate your direction. “Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity.” (Titus 2:7 ESV) The essence of my purpose is derived from the quality of excellence God has put in me. RECLAIM the EXCELLENCE in your business, your family, your job, your friends… in you!
