She believed she could, so she did.

I compose these monthly motivations 2-3 weeks before delivery, but this morning I woke with a different message for the same quote provided in the calendar. Early this morning, I woke to a mini panic attack. My heart was beating fast and anxiety overtook me. A day when I planned to be at work extremely early, I arrived at the normal time. My phone kept ringing, the notifications buzzed endlessly - I was overwhelmed. By the time I got in my car, God was beginning to speak to me.

“You are procrastinating your purpose Lady.” A simple sentence rocked my world. A normal morning on #FacebookLive could not completed, I needed a personal motivation session.

At all times, the best of my business and personal life coincide with excellence. I have high expectations for myself and all things connected to me causing moments of doubt, Why?

All of the symptoms boiled down to fear and when I fear, I procrastinate just to avoid disappointment.

A number of fears contribute to procrastination, including but not limited to:

  • Fear that you’ll fail or do badly. Probably the most common one.

  • Fear of the unknown — the task is not familiar to you, so you don’t know what to do or where to start.

  • Fear of the uncomfortable. It’s easy to do things we’re comfortable with, but doing new things is uncomfortable so we put them off.

  • Fear of starting in the wrong place. You don’t start because what if you’re not starting the right way?

These are all obviously related, and they can be summed up as “fear of failure or not being good enough”.

When I took a step back and regrouped, I opened my bible to James 1:2-4 which says, “Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”

This journey IS going to be hard. There will be days that you want to quit. There will be days when you don’t want to do something. It’s only easier said than done when you don’t do it! Stop procrastinating your purpose. That task you haven’t completed yet may be your ticket to the next level. It may be the event that connects you to the multi-million dollar project. Believe that you can and YOU WILL.

My new prayer this month is specific and I want to share it with you.

I come to you asking for help with my tendency to procrastinate and put off important tasks, studies, projects and serious personal conversations until the last minute. Thank you for all of the times you rescued me from my own bad habits when I really didn’t deserve it because I didn’t work and plan ahead. Here are the specific things I always find myself putting off until they absolutely have to get done…

I confess my faults and offer my guilt, my stress and the loss of personal productivity to you, asking for your helping presence.I ask that you give me a greater appreciation of the preciousness of time. I thank you that you are the Lord of order, of creation and of history. You have created seasons, months and days, sleep and wake, life and growth. I am grateful that even though you live outside of time in eternity, you understand how I feel because your son Jesus had to make decisions and take action about what things he should make a priority. Help me to define my priorities and then follow the example of how Jesus got up early before sunrise and went off to lonely places to pray because it was on his priority list and he knew if he put it off till later, it wouldn’t get done. (Mark 1:35)

I pray that you will guide me. Please help me set good time priorities and stick with them. Give me self discipline. Empower me to ask others for help when I don’t know how to get started or how to finish up. Give me confidence in my ability to do big tasks. Help me to overcome the temptation to do other things that I’d rather be doing that are less important. I know that you want me to live a healthy, productive life. Help me learn how to break this habit. Empower me in my weakness. Bring me back when I stray. Focus me. Organize me. Remind me. Energize me. Amen.
